Livingston
Threatre Conservatory
by Danielle Smalling
Performance
dance isn't a phrase one often hears in Byrdstown. When one
hears the phrase performance dance, they think of the New
York City Ballet, San Francisco Dance Co., or Broadway. But
there are many ballerinas, tappers, and jazzers right here
in the small town of Byrdstown.
I'm not talking about the kind of dancing seen at school dances.
I'm talking about professionally choreographed dancing. Dancing
that takes hard work and dedication. Many of the dancers take
ballet/tap classes at least once a week from one to two hours.
They work hard on improving their technique and arm positions.
The dancers take a class very seriously, but they also have
lots of fun.Dancers not only learn choreography, but are also
taught the fundamentals o dance and lessons of life. Dancing
helps the students learn responsibility; it is expected of
the dancers to arrive at class on time and bring the proper
attire. Dancing also teaches discipline; it's very important
to listen during class, follow directions carefully, and remain
poised at all times. Respect is also shown while dancing;
everyone shows respect toward the other dancers and toward
the teacher. As you can see, dance is much more than the physical
motions the observer sees on stage.Dance isn't only about
learning, its also about expressing feelings and emotions.
I have always heard the expression, "without emotion
you are just another dancer," and now I know it to be
true. When you are on stage in front of hundreds of people,
you have to express your emotions through the dance and feel
the music because that's whay makes dance exciting and fun
to watch. No one can imagine the feeling a dancer gets when
they dance in their first recital, the nervousness before
each performance, performing your first solo, or the first
time they dance on their toes in pointe shoes. The feeling
is indescribable. In dance you learn to have apprreciation
for music and the art of dance.
As young children we've watched dance performances, Broadway
shows, and dance competitions on television, and have always
asked, "why can't that be me?" Dance is about having
fun and letting that dream come true. At Livingston Threatre
Conservatory we compete in dance competitions, participate
in dance work shops, and have fun spending time together.
Dancing is for eveyone. It doesn't matter the age, the size,
or the talent of a person. Everyone is treated equal and I
guess you could say,"everyone gets playing time".
My favorite part of dancing is NO ONE KEEPS SCORE!At the end
of each year the dancers are rewarded for their hard work
throughout the year by presenting a Spring Performance. All
the dancers from the studio perform in various types of dance.
The performance music is anything from popular dance music
to oldies music. We invite you to join us in supporting our
love for dance. The 2003 Performance is at Cookville Drama
Center on Friday, May 16 at 7:00p.m. and Saturday, May 17
at 5:00p.m. For ticket information please call the Cookeville
Drama Center at
(931)-528-1313. Hope to see you there.
